Inspired by Morse Code, ASCII Graphic Glitch Art — Volume One investigates ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) and Unicode as visual languages for digital art and design. Traditionally used to encode letters, numbers, and symbols across computer systems, these character sets are reimagined here as tools for abstraction—transformed into patterns, structures, and typographic compositions that communicate beyond words.
This book explores experimental, abstract, and glitch-based visual systems using ASCII and extended Unicode characters, moving beyond traditional representational ASCII art.
Spanning over 372 pages, this volume presents original ASCII and Unicode graphics created between 2010 and 2013 during Rozita Sophia Fogelman’s M.A. studies in Multimedia Arts at California State University East Bay. Produced in real time using HTML on early social media platforms, these works evolved into a living digital archive: the ASCII Digital Design Museum, a pioneering online space dedicated to experimental text-based art.
More than a visual collection, this book functions as a research-driven exploration of how simple 8- and 16-bit code systems can be repurposed as eco-conscious tools for art and design. Through repetition, scale, and multimedia processes, Fogelman reexamines positive and negative space, glitch aesthetics, and digital pattern-making as a sustainable, post-material practice within net-art and contemporary design culture.
First self-published in Berkeley, California in 2013, the project was later cataloged by the Library of Congress (Control Number: 2022482046). It has since inspired further publications, fashion works, experimental art films, fine art projects, and interdisciplinary research. The ASCII Digital Design Museum was subsequently recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in Reflective Conceptual Ideation.

ASCII – Graphic Glitch Art – Volume Two is a 414 page collection of experimental black-and-white compositions created through ASCII and extended text-based character systems. Produced in real time on simple text platforms, these works transform the digital interface into a live, generative canvas—where repetition, scale, and fragmentation become visual language.
Building on the architectural and systemic patterns introduced in Volume One, this edition presents a focused exploration of abstract, non-representational text-based forms. Rather than traditional pictorial ASCII imagery, the works investigate density, rhythm, and structure through enlarged glyph fields and glitch-inspired typographic textures.
For Rozita Sophia Fogelman, ASCII became an immediate and versatile medium for creating visual systems through continuous online action, particularly within early social media environments. This volume represents the culmination of that exploration.
As an eco-artist and eco-activist, Fogelman demonstrates how text-based digital art can operate as a sustainable design practice—eliminating physical materials such as paper and ink while preserving immediacy, permanence, and accessibility. The result is a body of work situated at the intersection of digital abstraction, conceptual typography, and post-material design.

Black and White – Principles of Design is a 564-page collection of black-and-white compositions documenting an extended exploration of form, contrast, and spatial perception. Moving from ink on paper to net-art and digital painting, the volume traces a sustained investigation into the dynamics of positive and negative space across multiple media.
Through abstraction, repetition, and reduction, the works examine how visual balance, tension, and structure emerge when color is removed and form is distilled to its essentials. The project deconstructs conventional approaches to design and reimagines the relationship between image, surface, and space within both physical and digital environments.
Both a personal archive and a conceptual study, this book reflects Rozita Sophia Fogelman’s long-standing fascination with navigating the boundaries between art, design, and spatial logic. The collection functions as a research-driven body of work, revealing how minimalist systems and black-and-white constraints can generate complexity, depth, and expressive range.
First published in August 2015, Black and White – Principles of Design stands as a foundational volume within Fogelman’s broader interdisciplinary practice, connecting drawing, digital media, and conceptual design into a cohesive visual investigation.

BODY, LAND & WATER
Body, Land & Water is a collection of abstract paintings exploring the interconnected relationship between the human body, natural landscapes, and elemental forces. Spanning works created between 2005 and 2012, the book presents a sustained investigation into color, surface, and emotional perception through minimalist and color-field abstraction.
Through layered pigments, subtle textures, and restrained compositions, the paintings evoke states of transition—between presence and absence, solidity and fluidity, interior sensation and external environment. Rather than depicting literal forms, the works invite intuitive and subconscious responses, allowing color and material to function as carriers of memory, movement, and spatial depth.
Created by Rozita Sophia Fogelman, this body of work reflects an early foundation in her interdisciplinary practice. The paintings anticipate later research-driven explorations of sustainability, material reduction, and post-material visual systems, situating the project within a broader inquiry into the relationship between art, ecology, and perception.
Body, Land & Water serves both as a visual archive and a contemplative meditation on abstraction as a means of navigating personal, environmental, and emotional landscapes.
